ShadeTrace Map
Privacy Policy
Effective October 24, 2026
ShadeTrace Map does not require an account and does not contain advertising or analytics. The developer does not sell personal information.
Information handled by the app
ShadeTrace Map processes the place you select or search for, including its latitude and longitude, to show maps, calculate sun and shade information, and retrieve weather conditions.
With your permission, the app uses your device’s location while the app is in use to center the map and calculations on where you are. Location access is optional: if you decline, you can still search for and select any place. You can change this at any time in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > ShadeTrace Map.
The compass uses your device’s heading sensor to point toward the sun. Heading readings are used only on your device and are not sent anywhere.
Basic preferences, such as your language choice and whether onboarding has been completed, are stored locally on your device. To power the home-screen widget, the app also stores the next sunrise and sunset times and a short place name in storage shared only with the widget on your device. The developer does not receive this locally stored information.
Third-party services
To provide its core features, the app sends internet requests directly from your device to these services:
- OpenStreetMap Nominatim receives place-search text to return matching names and coordinates, and receives coordinates (including your device location, if you allow it) to look up a nearby place name. See the OpenStreetMap Foundation Privacy Policy.
- Open-Meteo receives the selected latitude and longitude to return weather and sun information. See Open-Meteo’s terms and privacy information.
- OpenFreeMap provides map styles and map data. See the OpenFreeMap Privacy Policy.
- Esri ArcGIS provides map imagery. See the Esri Privacy Statement.
Like most internet services, these providers may receive technical information such as your IP address, device or browser details, requested resource, and request time. Their handling of information is governed by their own policies. ShadeTrace Map does not control their systems.
How information is used
Your device location, selected places, and coordinates are used only to provide the map, place-search, weather, compass, widget, and sun-simulation features you request. The developer does not use this information to build advertising profiles or track you across apps and websites.
Retention
The developer does not operate a user-account database and does not retain your location, searches, or selected coordinates on a developer-controlled server. Third-party providers may retain request information under their respective policies.
Your choices
You can turn off location access for the app in iOS Settings at any time. You can stop third-party network requests by not using place search, maps, or weather features, by disabling the app’s network access where your device permits, or by uninstalling the app. Deleting the app removes its locally stored preferences and widget data. See the User Privacy Choices page for details.
Children
ShadeTrace Map is not designed to collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through a support request, contact the developer so it can be removed.
Security
Internet requests are made over encrypted HTTPS connections. No method of electronic transmission or storage is completely secure, and absolute security cannot be guaranteed.
Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated when the app, its providers, or legal requirements change. The effective date at the top of this page will identify the latest revision.
Contact
For privacy questions or requests, contact the developer through the ShadeTrace Map support tracker. Do not post sensitive personal information in a public issue.
